#HealthyBicester - Saturday 13th May 2017

A day of fun and games to celebrate Healthy Bicester
A free open beach, music and dance performances and cookery demos are among the fun and healthy activities that will inaugurate Healthy Bicester.
On Saturday 13 May Cherwell District Council, Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group, Oxford Academic Health Science Network and A2Dominion Housing Group are launching the Healthy New Town Programme in Bicester town centre with a fun, action-packed day for people of all ages to enjoy.
The event kicks off at 10am with a health walk and a social cycle ride, starting at the top of Sheep Street; and a board game café at the Methodist Church. It finishes at 4pm after the sandcastle competition in Market Square.
Ian Davies, Cherwell’s director of operational delivery and executive leader of Bicester Healthy New Town programme, said: “We really want this day to be a great celebration for Bicester and its residents. The town has been awarded Healthy New Town status because we really aim to make health and wellbeing the focal point of the town’s growth.
“Healthy Bicester is taking shape and it’s worth celebrating this by offering residents a type of entertainment that is healthy and fun. At the same time and more importantly, it’s not just for kids and young people, families and older people will also find many activities to enjoy.
“With this launch event we are asking all residents to be part of Healthy Bicester because adopting a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be a sacrifice, it can be enjoyable and fun.”
In 2016 the Government awarded Bicester Healthy New Town status with the aim of using the town's growth to tackle levels of obesity and social isolation. Therefore, the two key priorities of the programme are to increase the number of children and adults who are physically active and of healthy weight and to reduce the number of people who feel socially isolated.
Mr Davies continued: “We will provide all the support possible to help residents adopt a healthier lifestyle. At the launch event there will be cookery demonstrations to teach people how easy and affordable it can be to take control over calories, sugar, salt and fat intake. Furthermore, all the social activities scheduled for the day are designed to enable people to connect with others in their community, which can really help combat loneliness”
In order to avoid congestion in the town centre, since Market Square will be closed to traffic, residents are instead encouraged to leave their car at home and come to the event either walking, by bike or public transport. For those who prove they arrived without a car, by posting a picture on social media with the hashtag #HealthyBicester, there will be a free goodie bag at the Health Bus in Wesley Square, outside the library.
